Sayuri Chang begins a new painting as if casting a stone into the middle of a pond. Starting in the middle of a fresh piece paper with her first color, she works with intention and absolute focus. At times, Chang works with sweeping, grand movements to create broad, archlike gestural marks across the surface of her composition, like huge waterfalls or shifting tectonic plates. Other times, she makes small, incidental, delicate marks throughout the area of the picture plane. The complete work is a marvelous compendium of little blips and flurries of marks amongst large swaths of thick, glacial paint. Her styles coalesce into an animated abstract landscape that suggests the birth of an entirely new world.
Sayuri Chang has been making art since 2016.
